- By the year 1986, I had already given up on the Roman Catholic upbringing that I had. Even though I did not attend any type of church service, I was still curious about the things of God. My friend Chaz, who had a strong Christian upbringing, would occasionally speak to me of Spiritual things; however I didn’t understand most of what he said. As the Bible says: “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned. ” (1 Cor 2:14). Eventually, while Chaz and I were in a city park one evening, he asked me outright, “Are you Saved? Do you want to ask Jesus into your heart right now?” I said the “sinners prayer” and felt pretty good about what I had just done. To be safe, I said it again when I got home (just to be sure that God had heard me) and truly believed that I was born again. I would attend church off-and-on for the next couple years and gradually I ended up not attending at all for a few years. It didn’t matter. I was saved. I said the “sinners prayer”, twice at that. I was just backslidden. I planned to get right with God again real soon, just not today.
One evening during a business trip I was speaking to Brian, my fellow traveler. He presented the Gospel to me as I have never heard it before. Brian showed me that I had broken the entire Law of the LORD. If I was to die that night, I would receive justice from the Judge of the Universe. I deserved Hell because of my sinful nature. I was shocked and, I must confess, a bit insulted. I told him that I said that prayer years ago, that I was going to Heaven. I learned that night that I had never repented of my sins. I had never truly trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as my savior. Later that evening, with my eyes red from weeping. I fell to my knees and poured my heart out to God and confessed and repented of all my sins. I have given my life to the Lord and have accepted His gift of Salvation. By the Grace of God, I have been soundly saved and have no desire to be of this world. I thank God for men and women that are not ashamed of Biblical evangelism. Because of one man who swallowed his fears, I heard that beautiful Gospel of Jesus Christ. I am still in awe over how powerful the Law is when it is used lawfully. That powerful Law has made the Gospel so sweet and His Grace truly amazing.
My prayer is that I honor my Father in Heaven by leading others in faithfulness, and that He will bless our faithfulness with much fruit that never perishes. Amen.
