For many years I used to read Matthew 7:21-22 without understanding completely what Jesus was talking about. I understood the words, but thought it was quite unbelievable that there is someone who thinks he is saved, heals the sick, casts out demons and calls Jesus Lord, but is not saved at all.
Matthew 7:21-22
Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'
If you read the verses a little more carefully, you notice some important elements.
What does it mean that Jesus is your Lord?
I have met many people who consider themselves Christians, but still smoke. What scares me a little bit about that is not that they smoke, but that most of them admit that they believe Jesus wants them to stop.
Let me say this very clearly: you cannot consciously ignore Jesus' wishes and at the same time call Him Lord. If Jesus is Lord, then it is Him who decides and we have to obey. You cannot blame addiction, friends, family, growing up or anything else. Let me quote Jesus, "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" (Luke 6:46)
The scary thing is that in Matthew 7:21-22 there is a group of people who called Jesus Lord, but did not live according to His will. Jesus' answer to them was, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
Another thought worth thinking about a little is this:
If Jesus is really your Lord, and you yourself chose to serve Him, should His wish that something ought to be done not be enough for you to do it? Or does He have to command you to do something to make you obey Him?
