Thanks for joining the group. We are not connected to any group at the present time. We moved from an Old Order Amish group in Kentucky in February to where we live now on Smith Island. As you probably know, districts decide what will be in their ordnung (rules for daily living) by vote at their house church meetings. It is part of living in a redemptive community ( a community of believers dedicated to the Lord). Most churches have some form of this same thing but may not openly admit it. (ie) Baptist, Methodist, preach against the sin of gambling (rightly so) and therefore have their own form of ordnung. In the Old Order Amish and Mennonite redemptive community setting it is just formalized by vote in a church meeting.
Having said all of that, we have formed a new district here on Smith Island. We are the only ones in the district right now but are praying the Lord will send more plain people here to join us. When the Lord leads we go! The local church here has asked for teaching and we are always happy to do that, but as soon as more plain people move here we will have our home church and start a redemptive community here. No two Old Order districts are alike. Each has it's own needs and fashion their ordnung after those needs. This is a fishing village on an island where there are no cars. There are laws that prohibit out houses, and the only way to get water is from the community well which requires electirc pumps. So in our ordnung we allow electric, but still do not allow TV, radios, and other worldly appliances. Wood is impossible to get on the island so we must cook on an electric range (we perfer our wood stove but must do what must be done). Communications are not as easy as other communities so we do allow computers for business and communications, but not for "surfing" and only for adults. These may change as we find ways to do some of these things in a more plain and simple way.
One other important difference in our district, we are missions minded and follow the great commission to go unto all the world; if not ourselves then by supporting those who do. I hope this helps some. Our women do cover and dress modestly. We allow photos, but not pictures to hang on walls. We believe in daily study of God's word and non-resistance.
Lisa, God is speaking to you, listen and obey. Each day He directs us if we are willing to lay down our stubborn selfish will. Sit at the feet of Jesus and learn.
In Christ,
Mark and Mary-Ann and Family
